The Colchester Post is an independent news and information site for Colchester and north Essex. We work from public records, we cite them, and we are not connected to any of the councils we report on.
The patch
Colchester is the anchor, under Colchester City Council: the town centre and the castle park, the garrison, Greenstead, Highwoods, Stanway, Wivenhoe and the riverside out towards the estuary. Braintree, Halstead and Witham are in Braintree District. Manningtree, Mistley and the Tendring side of the Stour are in Tendring District. Three councils, three planning registers, and a reader who just wants to know when the bins go out. We name the right one every time.
What we report
Each council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Colne and the Stour, and company filings in The Gazette. Essex County Council runs roads, schools and social care across all three districts, and we say when a decision is theirs.
How we work
Every fact is tied to a named source and linked, so you can read the original. Where a document is ambiguous we say so. Plain British English throughout, no press releases dressed up as reporting, and no photographs taken from other outlets.
Reorganisation
Essex is due to be reorganised into a smaller number of unitary authorities from April 2028, which will change who answers for planning, bins and council tax here. We will report the detail from the published documents rather than from speculation.
